A Winnick Homes design philosophy is that the family's lifestyle should dictate the floor plan of the home. The hub of the home is the kitchen area. A well designed kitchen, such as this combination kitchen and nook which opens to an adjoining family room, offers space for families to gather, to entertain friends, or create fabulous feasts. Photograph © Carlson Productions, LLC.

While quality is routinely proclaimed as a benefit in virtually every new product, there is an underlying factor in producing true quality that is often overlooked. Old World craftsmen understood this element, and New World artisans are rediscovering the essential importance of taking care in the creation of quality products. In creating a Better Building Experience for their customers. The Winnick Homes’ team produces each new home with a watchful eye toward craftsmanship, value, and care.

“I am a third generation builder,” states David Gans, cofounder of Winnick Homes. “As a kid, I began learning about home building by sweeping out homes for my grandfather, Albert Winnick of Albert Building Company. A common thread that permeates everything we do is creating a Better Building Experience for our customers. Together with partner Randy Spagna, we try to make the entire building process as seamless as possible for them, we welcome their involvement in shaping their new home project.”

That means building each home with unprecedented care, and communication is a key factor. Home buyers sit down with the site superintendent and sales counselor even before construction on their home begins to thoroughly review the home plan and selections, and go through a detailed checklist of what to anticipate in the upcoming construction phase of the home. The sales counselor keeps the home buyer updated on the status of the home on a weekly basis, and additional meetings are held on site as the home progresses. As the home nears completion, a Home Orientation session takes place.

David Gans relates, “At the Home Orientation meeting, our Quality Assurance Manager meets with the home buyer and walks through the home making sure every detail meets with the home buyer’s approval. The operational and maintenance aspects of the home are also reviewed, and there is a follow-up meeting the day of the closing to verify that anything that needed further attention at the Home Orientation meeting has been addressed. Our philosophy is to never compromise quality and exceed our customers expectations every step of the way.”

That philosophy is apparent in the beautiful homes and communities offered by Winnick Homes. True neighborhood settings and family lifestyle amenities are common themes in Northville Ridge, Walden Woods, Mission Pointe, and Tremont Park. Among the community features are parks, walking and jogging trails, play areas, some also include a neighborhood clubhouse with pool. Many of the home sites offer day light or walkout basement options, and Mission Pointe offers several sites on Belleville Lake (Wayne County’s only inland lake) as well as a community park area on the lake.

“Our communities take our focus on family lifestyle beyond the home. Yet our home designs come from our research throughout the country in finding what people are looking for in a new home. Many of our homes feature open floor plans, with kitchens and nooks opening into family rooms. Several of our homes also feature dual staircases, providing easy access to the stairs from the kitchen and family room area. A floor plan should not dictate a family’s lifestyle, the lifestyle should dictate the floor plan. That is a primary goal we have in mind as we develop our home designs.”

Winnick Homes is associated with an expert team of trades and suppliers who also take an active role in creating each home with care and precision. The company holds a trade committee meeting on a quarterly basis, where up to six trade partners (who are rotated among the various trades in subsequent meetings), sit down with the Winnick Homes staff and evaluate the current construction procedures and discuss market trends.

David Gans states, “Like our customers, we don’t want any surprises. Every member on our team has a role to fulfill in the building process. Homes are not built by robots on an assembly line, they are built by hand. Our hands on approach in conjunction with our operational procedures and ongoing relationships with our trades and suppliers are essential to the continuity of the quality of our homes. Randy Spagna is in charge of our field supervision and interacts with our trades people on a daily basis. So every home we build is scheduled and supervised by a partner in our organization.”

While the home building process contains countless tasks and components (Winnick Homes Quality Assurance Process checklist alone is thirteen pages long covering over 300 items), often it is the small things that make the big difference in a home built with care. Winnick Homes has developed a “Quality Zone” program that communicates the company's expectations to the various trades working in the home.

“It may be small things,” notes David Gans, “like putting covers over all the vent opening to keep debris out of duct work. Or not allowing smoking or eating in the home, and not wearing shoes in the home as it nears completion. Throughout the entire process, we treat the home as though it belongs to the home buyer even though closing may be months away. We try to look at the home building process from the customers point of view.”

Winnick Homes has assembled a group of artisans committed to emphasizing care and quality in new home building. Even after the home is complete, a company representative contacts the home buyer a few days after closing, sixty days after closing, and near the end of the warranty period to ensure they are fully satisfied with their new home. David Gans observes that a strength in being a mid-sized building operation is that the company is able to offer much of the value of a larger organization, yet they are nimble enough to respond quickly and personally to the customers desires.

“After purchase agreement is signed,” he states, “I call every purchaser to personally thank them for buying a Winnick Home. There are many choices available to today's home buyer, and I am grateful that we have been able to offer the best in design, location and value for those purchasing our homes. We also understand that is just the beginning of our job. We must build their home in a timely manner, without compromise in quality, and continue to service each homeowner long after they move into their new home.”
